Parking garages have become the catalyst for increased car congestion in the Auckland CBD. However, an emerging paradigm shift of urban planning discourages car usage in the city centre due to increased carbon emissions, noise pollution, and street congestion. Instead, we are encouraged to rethink how we commute to work. Adaptive reuse becomes the solution to this problem by redeveloping existing parking structures into habitable spaces. This design proposition explores the adaptive reuse of the Victoria Street Wilson Carpark into the new Auckland City Library.
