Grand Front Osaka Tower B, a 175m office tower in Osaka, integrates offices, shops, restaurants, and parking with direct access to JR Osaka and Hankyu Umeda train stations. The building employs buckling reinforced brace frames for seismic protection. A new design proposal addresses ventilation, thermal comfort, and rainwater and energy conservation. Inspired by Nara's Machiya townhouses, a double-skin glass facade facilitates cross and stack ventilation. A passive water pump pipe system for heating and cooling utilises phase change material. Self-sustainable electricity from BIPV Photovoltaic glass aids mechanical systems, while a rooftop garden collects rainwater. Fire protection measures include fireproof blinds and mechanical fire dampers. The proposal embodies a philosophy of retrofitting for improved climate control, marrying traditional strategies with innovative solutions.
